Conan falls for Canada
Late-night funnyman wreaks havoc at border
By CHRIS DOUCETTE and ALEX UROSEVIC -- Toronto Sun
QUEENSTON -- Funnyman Conan O'Brien pitched in to defend the Great White North's border yesterday in true Canadian fashion -- with snowballs and a shovel.
Dressed in a red Mountie's uniform, the late-night TV talk-show host and his film crew spent part of the afternoon clowning around at the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge taping segments for his upcoming stint in Toronto.
After shovelling the road clear for vehicles entering the country from the U.S., O'Brien stopped various unsuspecting motorists and conducted mock Customs checks.
"So what are you doing, driving in circles?" O'Brien asked two women who told him they were from St. Catharines and heading to St. Catharines.
When the pair said they had nothing to declare, O'Brien handed them a six-pack of beer -- so they would have something to declare.
O'Brien stopped a truck driver and accused him of smuggling small people into Canada in the storage box under his rig. And in an attempt to push the 18-wheeler down the road from behind, O'Brien slipped and fell flat on his face in the snow.
Another motorist in a pick-up truck, the back of which had filled with snow in the storm, received a ticket from O'Brien for his illegal load.
"There may be free trade, but you can't import snow," O'Brien joked with the motorist. "Canada already has enough of it."
O'Brien and his crew also visited Niagara Falls yesterday, but media were not allowed to tag along for fear too much would be given away before the shows air.

After visiting City Hall Monday night with former Kids in the Hall star Scott Thompson, O'Brien was also seen joking with commuters on the TTC.
Geoff Ho spotted O'Brien at the Bloor subway station and was fortunate enough to snap a picture with O'Brien while travelling on an eastbound train.
"I was a bit in shock because I didn't expect to see him," the 21-year-old U of T student said. "He was really funny."
